What is Dota 2?

Defense of the Ancients 2, usually shortened to Dota 2, is Valve’s follow up to Defense of the Ancients, a fan-made modification of Warcraft III. The mod was so popular that Valve decided to adopt it as its own fully fledged game – and while Dota was the prototypical MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, Dota 2 is more polished, more fleshed out and the most complex MOBA on the market. Its main competitor is League of Legends, but LoL was mainly a copy of Dota’s formula but with added accessibility – Dota 2 has one of the steepest learning curves of any multiplayer game, while LoL is much easier to learn. What Dota 2 loses in ease of learning, it more than makes up for in its complexity and depth.

Dota 2 also boasts the biggest prize pool in esports – The International is the most prestigious tournament in gaming with an absolutely staggering reward of over $30m in 2019. This makes every game at TI mean more than any other game in esports, and this in turn makes it the most exhilarating viewing experience in esports. Whilst it can be extremely tough to follow at first, with a bit of experience you’ll pick it up fast and soon you’ll be an expert.

This giant wedge of cash available for the winner of TI might be out of reach for most of us, but there is money to be made if you can predict the games. Dota 2 Betting at Thunderpick can make you a little bit of that $30m for yourself if you know how to bet effectively. With the best odds on Dota 2, secure deposits, the ability to deposit with cryptocurrencies and instant and secure withdrawals, betting on Dota 2 with Thunderpick is your way to make money.

Watching Dota 2

The goals of Dota 2 are simple. It’s a 5v5 game where you just have to destroy the enemy Ancient – hence the name Defense of the Ancients – with each player piloting a different ‘Hero’, the name for a playable character. Whilst the end goal is simple, the gameplay most certainly is not. Each one of the 100+ heroes has a unique set of spells that they use to take out the opposition and push down towers – but you’ll need a good grasp of the game to figure out what hero does what. Once you have that knowledge, teamfights become a lot easier to follow and the hype starts to build.

To understand, you need to spend a little bit of time playing. Luckily for you, Dota 2 is free to download and play and there are loads of free resources on the internet that will teach you how to get started and how to improve. The game is not easy, and it will be frustrating, but it’s potentially the most rewarding game around when you get there – and if you want to make money betting on Dota 2, you probably want to know as much as you can. Understanding the game is essential to figuring out who’s the real deal and, well, who isn’t. It also gives you some entry knowledge to understand how the game works at pro level – trust me, sometimes it feels like a very very different game.

Once you understand Dota 2, dive into the pro scene. Find out who’s in form, watch some VODs of the best teams and see what you can decipher. Watch enough and you’ll figure out very quickly who you can trust in and who crumbles under pressure. Betting on Dota 2 is about being able to spot the teams who might let you down, and backing the sure-fire winners. Once you’ve got the knowledge, put it to the test at Thunderpick, and bet on Dota 2 with the best Dota 2 odds on the market.

Why Should I Bet on Dota 2?

Betting on Dota 2 can make any game much more exciting – when there’s money on the line, suddenly you’re a superfan of whichever team you bet on! There is plenty of Dota being played every week, but the big events are where the big money is and that’s where everyone is firing on all cylinders. If you really know your stuff you can make money between big tournaments, but just betting on Dota 2 only around TI can still get you some pretty tasty winnings.

Make sure you do your research properly before betting – there are plenty of stats and resources online to help you out, and they’ll all have schedules of games that are happening every week. You can use Thunderpick as a schedule for the upcoming games, too – as we detail every game you can bet on.

Understanding the Odds

Betting on Dota 2 is a fine art, but sometimes just picking the winner isn’t the right way to go. Thankfully, at Thunderpick, you can bet on Dota 2 in a few other ways.

The simplest bet you can make is a Match Winner bet. A simple Dota 2 bet on 1.4 odds would return a 10% profit. So for example, if you bet €1, you will get €1.40 back. 1.1 odds would suggest that the bet is a very likely winner. Odds of 5.0 would suggest a less likely winner, and 101.00 suggest it’s very unlikely. If you think we’ve got it wrong and those 5.0 odds should be much lower, prove it by betting and winning! When it comes to Outright Winner bets, the same odds apply, but picking the overall winner of a tournament will usually get you better odds.

We also offer odds on Team To Slay The First Roshan, which is a giant neutral monster on the map that gives a huge buff. The first Roshan can be a massive part of the game, and here at Thunderpick we offer Dota 2 bets on it. Learn which teams play better around the biggest objective in the game, and you can make some money on it!

Combo betting on Dota 2 can be a way to get better odds on the favourites, or astronomical odds if you can find two or more upset winners. Combo betting (sometimes known as a ‘parlay’ or ‘accumulator’) is betting on two or more games and therefore the odds are multiplied together. If you bet on a 1.5 odds winner and a 2.0 odds winner, for example, you would make a profit of 200% if you combo’d them and they both won, or 150% if you didn’t combo them. Combo betting is the simplest way to get the best odds on Dota 2 – but it requires incredible foresight.

At Thunderpick, we offer various markets for Dota 2 match betting. Match Winner, which is simple – pick the winner and we’ll pay out. Correct Score bets are for the more confident among you – in a best of three or best of five series, if you can find the 2-1 or 2-0 win, we’ll pay you a little bit more for your troubles.

Handicap Bets are similar but offer a little more wiggle room – if you think Team B will get at least two maps in a best of five, you can bet on Team B +1.5 and you will win the bet no matter who wins the series – as long as it’s close. Similarly, you can bet Team A -1.5 if you think they will win 3-0 or 3-1. Bet on Dota 2 with Thunderpick, no matter how you want to bet.
